Ice grip symbol: A new standard of winter tire

Ice Grip Symbol for the best winter tires on ice

For years, Canadian drivers have been encouraged to look for the three-peak mountain snowflake symbol to indicate a dedicated winter tire is, indeed, safe for winter driving. To earn the mountain snowflake, a winter tire had to pass traction tests on snow. Now, drivers who face icy roads can look for a new symbol: the ice grip symbol.

At Kal Tire, we’re excited to share news about the ice grip symbol—and how you can find tires designed for icy conditions.

What does the new ice grip winter tire symbol mean?

The new ice grip symbol is a way for drivers to identify winter tires designed to deliver superior performance braking on ice. It’s an international symbol developed by the ISO (International Organization for Standardization).

To earn the ice grip symbol, all tires will have to pass traction tests on icy surfaces. Tests are conducted at an accredited independent test laboratory. Tires have to perform at least 18 per cent better than a standard reference tire to receive the symbol. That’s a big difference!

Ice Grip Symbol for Tires

In Canada, which tires carry the new ice grip symbol?

Finnish winter tire pioneer Nokian Tyres played a key role in developing the standards for the ice grip emblem—and it was an early adopter.

At Kal Tire, two Nokian tires will soon carry the ice grip symbol. The Hakkapeliitta R5 non-studded tire features a double block grip design to help bite into snow and ice, along with a new rubber compound that ensures the tire will stay soft and flexible at even the coldest temperatures. While the Hakkapeliitta 10 non-studded and studded winter tires are designed with patented double stud technology that changes stud positioning to optimize grip and handling on ice and hard-packed snow.

Tires for ice conditions

Ice grip tires are among our most recommended winter tires for those who:

  • Live in urban areas with harsh winter conditions and face slick intersections and major roads
  • Live in rural areas where winter roads often see icy conditions, including black ice
  • Travel mountain passes and remote, windy roads for trips to ski hills or work

Since the best winter tires are the ones that will brake and corner when you need it most—if you face icy roads at all, a winter tire with the ice grip symbol is advised for your safety.

What do other tire symbols mean?

The ice grip symbol joins a handful of other sidewall symbols. Here’s a quick guide:

  • Ice grip: Superior braking performance on ice.
  • Three-peak mountain snowflake: Strong performance on snow. Learn more in our article: What does the Mountain Snowflake Symbol mean?
  • M+S / Mud and Snow: Reliable performance in shoulder seasons. This is technically a 3-season (all-season) tire that hasn’t passed the same snow traction test as a winter tire that bears the three-peak mountain snowflake symbol.

How else can you find the best tires for snow and ice?

How will your tires hold up when you need to brake quickly at a slippery intersection—or how will they corner when you’re coming down that windy road after a day of skiing and heavy snowfall?

We want drivers to be able to make confident decisions. Through Kal’s Tire Testing, independent tire testers rate some of our most popular tires in a range of conditions common on real Canadian roads throughout the year.
